Keeping up with the various social media sites can be overwhelming and rewarding at the same time. It is definitely a great way to meet like-minded people and new clients.
Having been a member of Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter since 2007/2008, it was difficult to understand exactly what to do or say on them at first. Once the profile information was complete…now what? I found out – join groups.
All of them have groups, but many of LinkedIn’s groups are very large. Therefore, more engaging with several discussions taking place.
Upon joining many of them, I found that my email was growing…not exactly what I was looking to do. BUT, now that I am making an effort to review the discussions in these groups, it is starting to make sense.
A recent post on Fast Company “5 LinkedIn Tips You Didn’t Know” suggest groups:
Start and use groups
While, unlike Twitter, you might not find celebrities hanging out, you will find a wealth of relevant conversations within LinkedIn groups. Creating a group is a cinch and a great opportunity to jump-start a good business chat. If you don’t know what group to join, click on “Groups You May Like” to get you started. To learn more about the benefits of Groups and what LinkedIn has planned for this feature in the future, visit their online tutorial.
Share YOUR information with your Groups on LinkedIn beyond the profile!
Sharing your information/links directly with the groups you join will increase interest/traffic.
Last week I tried something that I had not done previously in a group. I decided to post a link to a blog post in one of the groups that could relate to that particular topic. Ironically I posted a link to a tip about Facebook on LinkedIn! The weekend came, other distractions occurred, and I forgot about it.
Yesterday, I glanced at my traffic and WOW..my page views in one day “tripled”. Not the day I posted it which was a Friday, but on the following Monday!
Prior to that, I would comment on other discussions, but never initiated anything.
This test taught me a few things:
- First and foremost – share. If you don’t promote yourself – who will?
- The resources are right there…use them. People are sharing some awesome “FREE” information – make good use of it.
- Share with the groups…DUH..They are another place to network and learn who the people truly are behind their business.
Marketing/Social Networking/Social Media…is all about building relationships these days. These groups provide a positive way to learn more about people and to initiate conversations.
This is the start of another journey to continued growth. Keep learning and keep growing!
