The primary thing that helped my sanity (saved me) from completely going bald (as a result of pulling out my hair) – I back-up 24/7 on Mozy.com! Yay!!!!
Secondly, I moved in with a new roommate that has a new computer that she has kindly agreed to share..THANKS to the Universe for placing me in the right place at the right time!
In the past couple of months I have known two people who lost their computers the very same way. It just would not turn back on…..dead.
What would you do if suddenly you could not access your computer, no matter what you do, it just won’t turn on? Are you prepared for such a disaster?
Are YOU Backed Up?
That initial feeling when you realize that you cannot access your computer, especially when it is your primary livelihood is nothing nice. I can only hope that you are backing up in one way or another.
If you do not have a back-up process, start today! It will only take about 15 minutes to set up, and then forget it. It will have your back 24/7.
At one time, I utilized three different computers. I felt secure that if one went out, I had another.
I would save my most important documents on my external hard drive so that I could use it on any computer. At that time I did not trust online processes.
A little over a year ago my external hard drive stopped functioning – which pushed me to backing up online. I gave in AND so glad I did!
When my computer crashed I asked a few friends online and personally if they back up. One of my friends gave me a blank stare, another friend told me no, but she would start.
A few of the people who responded online said that they do, others thanked me for the reminder.
Regardless, if you have a business or not, don’t you have pictures and music you have downloaded you would not want to lose?
Carbonite vs. Mozy
I installed Carbonite for two of my clients and Mozy for myself. I chose Mozy for the monthly cost vs. the annual fee and to see if there were differences.
About a month ago, one of the clients I set up with Carbonite had a computer crash…just like mine, it would NOT turn on. She was on her way to Hawaii and called me in a panic.
I told her to relax, assured her that her data was not lost, have a great time and don’t worry about it. I explained that her information is backed up and we would be able to restore it when she returned.
She returned and asked me to help her select a new computer. I kept it with me for a few days to set it up. I logged into Carbonite, scheduled the restore, 72 hours later – everything was restored except Microsoft. She had to purchase the Microsoft Suite of products because she did not have the original disks.
Note: All restores take a few days because of the size of the files and your internet speed plays a major part.
My other friend that lost her computer did not have a back-up. She lost all of her data.
When I logged in to restore my files via Mozy…it was not as easy as Carbonite. One reason is because I had much more data than my client and the primary restore file was huge.
Every time I tried to restore the entire thing, it would just sit there. I decided to restore by folders which was a faster download, but a longer more manual process. It actually took me a little over a week to get everything but I do have all of it restored.
There was an extra step through Mozy that Carbonite did not have and that may be the only difference. I will say Carbonite won in comparison.
Back Up Options
External hard drives are still an option. Blank DVD’s and CD’s are an option if you want to manually back-up or follow the built in back-up process. Whatever you do…start something if you haven’t. I found an article that is a little outdated and the prices are different now, but it does a nice job explaining options – 8 Ways to Back-Up Your Computer (and Keep Your Stuff Safe).
Share your suggestions for backing up. If you don’t back-up regularly…why not? Have you ever lost all of your data?
