What is the norm?
Today is nothing like yesterday. Many of us are doing what we can to make ends meet and figuring out how to do things differently, we don’t have a choice.
When I cook using a recipe, marinade, seasoning packet, regardless of the instructions, I always add my own spin to it and do ‘somethin‘ different.
Then I attributed that instinct to how I move through my journey of life. Almost everything I do, I always add my own spin and add something extra. I love uniqueness…nothing too normal or I get bored. I guess it’s the Gemini in me :).
Don’t get me wrong I don’t want to go over the top, too far, but a little uniqueness always adds a spark.
After all, isn’t that what we strive to do in business..look for what’s unique about us vs. our competition?
I read a post today that just resonated with me, my life, and many of my friends. I think it is especially true for my fellow baby boomers. Two of my best friends lost their homes. Not because they were irresponsible, but life happened. I hurt for them because I could not help!
This is suppose to be the best part of our lives. Children grown, house paid off or close to it, vacations, a few luxuries, retirement vehicle – you know that Cadillac, or Mercedes that we would see older people drive around in when we were kids. It’s suppose to the time for us to enjoy life even more.
I was reading another post this morning by Brian Solis, author of “Engage” (great book). He shared a foreword he wrote for a friends new book. It is about ROI in Social Media. He writes:
Everything starts with the end in mind.
Success is not a prescription. There isn’t one way to excel or measure progress. But, that’s the point. We must first design outcomes into the equation. What do we want to accomplish? What’s the return we seek? Are we trying to sell, change, drive, cause, or inspire something specific? Are we reducing customer problems as measured by inbound volume, open tickets, public discourse? Are we trying to shift sentiment to a more positive state that increases referrals as a result?
Success requires definition based on intentions, goals, and mutual value…across the organization from the top down, bottom up, inside out and outside in.”
In this context he was referring to social media strategies, BUT doesn’t this apply to just about any business? I love this statement “Everything starts with the end in mind”…SO TRUE!
Are these not the same questions we really need to ask if we are trying to define our success or rather our expectations of our own success?
I know that if I want a different outcome, I must put different steps, efforts into place. I accept that my life is a result of decisions I make. I can’t blame everything on the economy, I made some poor decisions previously.
It’s not always easy, but the universe is sending reminders out…just in case you forget. I hear it loud and clear and TODAY I am ‘doin things differently’! As my good girlfriend, Rev. Freda loves to say “I’m jez sayin“!
Are you doing things differently? What is your formula for success?…please share below..I need all the suggestions I can get!
