There are awesome graphic artists out there, I just cannot afford one right now. I have learned to be creative in developing graphics for my clients and myself using very simple, easy software that does not cost an arm and a leg.
My goal is to ultimately hire someone to take on this piece of my business, but until such time, I will keep using my inexpensive methods. I am NOT a graphics person and don’t really offer the service, but if I am asked to create something…I will take a stab at it.
Recently a client asked that I spruce up her new blog. She wanted me to pick a theme and customize it. We have been working on other sites of hers as I just introduced her to WordPress about 6 months ago. This was for a special year-long project she has acquired. She is very excited and I wanted to make this special for her.
At first I had no clue what I could do since it was on WordPress.com vs .org. I knew the themes and options would be limited. She provided details about the project so I could get a feel for it.
Creativity is my favorite task so I accepted the challenge as well as I love working with this client – she has such great energy.
For me I find things flow better if I :
- Create the graphic for the header FIRST.
- Decide on the theme next.
This has not always been the steps I follow, but I now know it works the best for me. I have wasted quite a bit of time in the past trying to find a theme first.
Previously I wrote about stepping out of the box with PowerPoint for working with pictures. I still do for some things but now I have an additional method that I utilize when I want to take things a step further. This software was not created for these types of tasks..but hey why not try it.
I use Logo Design Studio Pro that I spent about $20 for. I had a previous version, so the upgrade was cheaper. I probably paid $20 for the previous version. I have made headers for different WordPress themes, flyers, logos – you name it. I really like it because it provides quite a few options and has worked very well.
I am starting to learn the open source (FREE) software Gimp. It is truly not the easiest software but I have figured out how to change words on existing photos and to covert photos to transparent.
Once her picture was transparent, I combined it with another and it worked out nicely.
She loves it and said if fit her perfectly. It took me a minute to find a theme that worked well with this header…but once I did, magic happened. Wanna see it – visit her site here. Yeah…another satisfied client!
I’d love to hear more creative ideas, please share!
