How many times have you heard a news person say, you can follow our guest (or me) on Twitter or you can enter a contest – win a great gift – IF you like us on Facebook?
Have you ever considered the influence others have on you via social media?
Our online presence is built around emotions.
We make purchases quite often because the online presence (social networking) of the company we purchased from, “touched” us in some way.
Here are a few quick tips to “touch up” and possibly extend your online presence.
Claim Your Name to Fame
It is imperative to have a presence on the most popular social networking sites. You may not want to be actively involved on ALL the sites, but consider starting a profile – claim your name.
Your name, your brand is your reputation. If someone claims it before you do, it’s possible they could cause problems. It may not be intentional, or even malicious, but it could happen.
Let’s face it, one of the downsides to social media, is the fact that people can spread a negative thought about you or your company very easily and quickly.
In 2008, someone used Seth Godin’s name and created a Twitter profile. They did not do anything malicious, or negative, he wrote about it, but it was not someone with the same name getting there first.
If you haven’t claimed your name on the major networking sites by now, it may be too late, but at least check it out and claim it!.
Redecorate Your House
We are visual, we love looking at beautiful things. Your website and social media should be a part of that.
When it’s time for spring or fall cleaning, we dust everything off, possibly buy new pictures, and change the furniture around.
Inviting us to your web space is like inviting us to your home. Make sure the images that are used are fresh and represent who you are. You don’t have to re-vamp the whole site, but adding new images can make a difference.
If you have visited my home lately, you may have noticed it keeps changing, (which is exactly how I am in my personal space too). I’m trying on new “clothes/themes” to see how it feels. Adding some color, new widget, something different just may help you secure that new client!
Create images with your quotes of brilliance and share on your social media profiles, or add them as widgets on your website and link it to a page or post.
A smart colleague of mine, Annie Sisk, gave some great options recently of sites that will help you in being creative with images – check out her recommendations.
Get Your Google+ On
As much as Bing is advertising about searching with them, I would bet the majority of us still tell each other to “google it” when we want to look for something.
According to CircleCount.com there are currently 235,000,000 million on Google+. (This website provides all kinds of very interesting statistics about the Google+).
Consider joining if you aren’t on it already, there are many perks to being on Google+.
If you have a Google account, you have Google+. Create some time and fine tune it:
- Tell us your story – update your profile – make sure your about section is up to date.
- Upload a great action photo – if appropriate. Ex. Your are a speaker and have a great picture showing you actually speaking.
- Make sure your website is linked
- Have you created a new cover image. Create one with your tagline and upload it. (See Annie’s blog post mentioned earlier for tools)
- Make sure your profile is visible. To make your Google Plus profile visible, go to the “about” section and select “profile discovery.” Then, make sure “visible” is selected. When you set up a Google Plus profile, “visible” is not automatic, so you have to do this before your profile is publicly seen.
